Long before there were four-wheel all-terrain vehicles and utility vehicles, the off-road world was dominated by amphibious, six-wheel drive machines – the first true ATVs! MAX ATVs have been out there, crawling through and over just about anything in their path, since 1969. Affordable MAX ATVs are in use in every imaginable off-road application: trail riding, hunting, fishing, farming, search & rescue, oil exploration, and numerous other industrial and recreational applications.
The Max range comprises the Max II (a compact two-seater with a separate load carrying space), the Max IV with an extended chassis and body-form capable of carrying four passengers, and the Buffalo All Terrain Truck which is a rugged utility vehicle offering room for two passengers plus hydraulically tilting flat bed load-carrying capacity.
At the heart of all Max ATV is the highly capable non-differential T-20 Skid Steer Transmission system, a Borg-Warner designed transmission optimised to provide the balanced and controlled torque and traction control that is fundamental to off-road usage. This provides efficient true six-wheel drive with efficient transfer of torque and low braking losses, which critically, is not reliant on differential slippage.
Each side is independently driven – the T-20 is effectively two integrated but distinct transmission systems, one for the right side and one for the left. This enables smooth tuning, turning from a standing start and eliminates uncontrolled transfer of power from one side to the other in mud or ice or snow, thus making for far safer and more precise handling. By stopping one side while the other side drives, the Max ATV can make a complete turn within the length of the vehicle – a zero turning radius – either in forward or reverse.
Max 6-wheel drive amphibious all-terrain vehicles have such outstanding off-road performance that their users confidently operate them in some of the most harsh and demanding environments in the world. Tested time and again over 4 decades of extreme usage, Max ATVs have not been found wanting, we are confident in the robust and durable design of our range.
Max ATVs drive is transferred through six 1-1/4″ diameter high-strength solid-steel axles, each supported by two sealed, heavy-duty bearings bolted directly to the frame. Tough, simple, and durable, they can grind through thick brush that would tear the rubber boots off the CV joints of your typical ATV or utility vehicle, eventually ruining the joint.
Water-obstacles are a routine challenge for off-road vehicles … depth and ground conditions will be the factors that dictate success or failure. Crossing water or mud carries risks beyond simply getting stuck, where unprotected components are submerged, covered in grit, washed clean of lubrication or simply damaged by unseen obstacles the future integrity of the vehicle can easily be compromised. Conventional ATVs and UTVs are particularly vulnerable to immersion damage to parts such as bearings, bushings, chains, disc brakes and compromised seals and boots leave the door open to more extensive (and expensive) CV shaft or even gearbox damage.
The lower body tub of Max ATVs is a formed sheet of high density plastic. Vital for flotation, this impermeable, tough and highly durable shield provides the highest levels of protection to occupants and to the entire drive-train – engine, chains, sprockets, bearings, disc brakes – all are contained within the dry protective interior of that body, clear of mud, sand, rocks, and other environmental debris. Protection, safety, robustness … all implicit.
And that final demon of water crossing – unknown depth – represents no significant challenge to Max. If the bottom falls away unexpectedly it floats.
Standard equipment on all Max includes: headlights, tail-lights, the highly regarded T-20 non-differential Skid Steer Transmission, electric start, trailer hitch, steel chassis, 12 volt battery and sealed bearings. Additionally, all Max ATVs will now be supplied with roll-over protection systems and seat belts as standard, fully in line with the Mudd-Ox policy for provision of high quality vehicles which are engineered for safety.
1) Six-wheel drive…
That’s right, all six wheels drive all the time, no matter what the surface.
MAX All-Terrain vehicles go in the water with no modification, no changes to the vehicle except insertion of two drain plugs. They go approximately four miles an hour in still water (ponds, creeks, lakes). The tyres make it move in water.
3) Zero turning radius…
Through its T-20 Skid Steer transmission, by stopping one side while the other side drives, the MAX ATV can make a complete turn within the length of the vehicle. It can also do the same thing in reverse and from a standing start.
4) Drive where you can’t walk…
Max ATVs exert less than three pounds per square inch of ground pressure – LOADED. A man exerts 8 pounds per square inch, a 4-wheel drive Jeep, 28 pounds per square inch; no wonder the Max ATV will go where you can’t walk. Add tracks and ground pressure is reduced to less than one pound per square inch, Fully Loaded!
5) Climb steep hills and obstacles…
Six-wheel drive and high torque characteristics give MAX the ability to go up or over almost anything.
6) Non-differential transmission…
Perhaps the most important feature. With the MAX ATV each side drives independently. This means smooth turns, turning from a standing start and no uncontrolled transfer of power from one side to the other in mud or ice or snow.
No piece of mechanical equipment or vehicle is totally safe, but MAX does come close. The vehicle is as wide (56 inches) as it is long at the wheelbase (50 or 58 inches). That means you are driving a square, giving you maximum side-to-side stability. We strongly recommend the roll bar or roll cage option with seat belts for maximum safety. And, unlike four-wheeled ATVs, you sit in a MAX, not on it.
